Sydney is in the bottom quarter of both the east coast of Australia and the coast of NSW. It was the first British colony in what was originally known as Terra Australis (Great Southern Land), and then for a period as New Holland. From Sydney the early settlers explored north and south mainly by sea at first and then by land to the west. Prior to British colonisation, the indigenous people, known collectively as Aborigines had been visited by people from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, as well as early Dutch traders to the East Indies.
